According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on a second generation version of its popular and affordable item tracker, the AirTag, which initially debuted in 2021. Hereβs everything what weβre expecting Apple to deliver with AirTag 2 later this year.
Upgrades
In a report from Bloombergβs Mark Gurman a few weeks ago, AirTag 2 has βprogressed in manufacturing testsβ, and there are three key upgrades to expect:
- Better range
- Improved wireless chip
- Higher focus on privacy
Apple will reportedly introduce a new ultrawide band chip in the next generation AirTag, allowing for up to triple the range with precision finding. This means youβll be able to track your AirTags from 30-90 meters away, vs just 10-30 meters away with the current generation version. A newer wireless chip could also improve location accuracy in less densely populated areas.
In the past, people have used AirTags for stalking, and some have even modified AirTags to completely disable the built in speaker, making it harder for Apple to make targeted users aware of a nearby AirTag. Improvements in anti-stalking features would hopefully make it easier for targeted users to locate AirTags.
Release date
AirTag 2 is expected to release in mid 2025, according to Bloomberg:
Apple is working on a new AirTag βΒ code-named B589 βΒ for release around the middle of next year.
In the meanwhile, if youβre considering buying the current generation of AirTag, theyβre currently on sale, with aΒ single AirTagΒ available for $23, and aΒ 4-packΒ for $69.99. With the 4 pack, thats around $18 per AirTag!
