The best of the last-gen Nvidia gaming GPUs, including the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, will be out of stock completely by the end of January. A new industry leak claims that graphics cards from the RTX 4070 upwards will no longer have available stock from the end of January, leaving gamers looking to buy a new card with fewer available options.
Itβs no surprise that Nvidia has been shifting its production efforts to cards like the RTX 5090, already likely to be the best graphics card that money can buy once it hits retailerβs shelves. However, while the GPU maker has a particularly dominant position, it isnβt immune to challenges from both Intel and AMD, and a stock clearout gives the RTX 50-series GPUs a cleaner run without being challenged internally by an older product line.
This particular rumor came from a locked post on Board Channels, shared in a report by ITHome. According to the post, current Nvidia graphics cards from the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 upwards will be βfully stockedβ in retailers in January but, following that, only RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060 cards will be available, although stock for those cards is also expected to βessentially enter the final stock phaseβ in Nvidiaβs Q1 2025 period, starting in February.
This isnβt a total surprise, as stock for RTX 40-series cards has been fluctuating for some time. Back in December, an earlier RTX 4070 stock rumor suggested that the mid-tier RTX 4070 would stop production in December, with warnings that supply would βnot be very highβ in January. However, this new leak suggests that the whole range of mid to high tier 40-series cards is now firmly on the way out.
As such, itβs also no surprise that Nvidia is releasing its mid-range RTX 5070 card far sooner than might have been expected, with the company previously tending to favor leaving several months between a flagship card launch and making lower-end cards available.
The new RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards are scheduled for release on January 30, while other cards, like the RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti only have a vague February 2025 date attached so far. Lower tier cards like the rumored RTX 5060 havenβt been announced yet, which explains why Nvidia is expected to continue to produce RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti cards for the time being.
Stock issues around a new Nvidia GPU launch arenβt uncommon, but without RTX 40-series stock to fall back on, gamers could be feeling the brunt of yet another GPU shortage. We will soon see if Nvidia and its partners are sufficiently prepared to deal with high enough demand for new RTX 5000 series cards to avoid significant stock disruption in the initial months of 2025.
If youβre thinking about how to build a gaming PC this year and the new RTX cards donβt interest you, now might be the time to pick up gamer-favorite cards like the RTX 4070 Super before stock runs out for good.
