The AMD Radeon RX 9070 is official, following AMDβs unveiling of its latest gaming GPUs at CES 2025. Details of the new card are still thin on the ground, but we know it will be coming out very soon and will be fighting it out with the Nvidia RTX 5070 for mid-range graphics card supremacy.
Unveiled alongside AMDβs top-tier card, the RX 9070 XT, the RX 9070 is the second-tier option out of the companyβs new RDNA 4 gaming GPU lineup. Itβs not set to be the very fastest card to grace our best graphics cards guide but could make for a great value option for those seeking a reasonably affordable option.
AMD Radeon RX 9070 release date
The RX 9070 release date is set for Q1 2025, with AMD yet to confirm a more precise date. Despite this, at least one online retailer has jumped the gun, posting 9070 pre-order listings that suggest youβll be able to put your money down for one of the new cards from January 23, 2025.
AMD Radeon RX 9070 price estimate
The RX 9070 is expected to cost around $450-$500. Thatβs based on past AMD launches like the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT, which launched with a $499 MSRP price tag. It also places it in a similar ballpark as the RTX 5070 that AMD has stated will be this cardβs main competition. Nvidia has priced its new mid-range card at $549, so we expect AMD to undercut that.
AMD Radeon RX 9070 specs estimate
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 specs are expected to include 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM, 3,584 stream processors, and a 2,520MHz boost clock speed.
AMD Radeon RX 9070 specs | |
Architecture | AMD RDNA 4 |
GPU | Navi 48 |
Die size | 300mmΒ² |
Compute units | TBD |
Stream processors | 3,584 |
RT cores | TBD |
Base clock | 2,070MHz |
Boost clock | 2,520MHz |
VRAM | 16GB 20Gbps GDDR6 |
Memory interface | 256-bit |
Memory bandwidth | 644.6GB/s |
Interface | PCIe 5.0 |
Power draw | TBD |
AMD hasnβt yet confirmed the RX 9070 specs yet, but a recent RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 specs leak suggests the new GPU will house 3,584 stream processors, running at up to 2,520MHz, with a base clock speed of 2,070MHz. This compares to the RX 9070 XT having 4,096 stream processors and clock speeds of 2,400MHz base and 2,970MHz boost.
Both GPUs are expected to be accompanied by 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM, giving them a plentiful supply compared to the RTX 5070βs 12GB. However, the Nvidia card uses faster GDDR7 VRAM, so despite itβs lower total allocation and narrower 192-bit memory bus β compared to the RX 9070βs 256-bit bus β the 5070 should still offer a lot of performance on the VRAM front.
Thereβs no word yet on the expected power consumption of the card but rumors suggest the RX 9070 XTβs TDP will be 329W, so weβd expect the RX 9070 to be slightly less than this. Based on our AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT cards hands on experience, theyβre not small and have larger coolers, so clearly thereβs a fair amount of power to dissipate.
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is also believed to use the Navi 48 GPU, though AMD still hasnβt confirmed this. The RDNA 4 architecture itβs based on, though, AMD has said βsuperchargedβ AI performance βimprovedβ ray tracing, and βbetterβ media encoding than its previous RDNA 3 cards, such as the RX 7900 XT.
Youβll also notice the naming of these new GPUs is slightly different to its older chips. AMD outlined the change at the RX 9070 launch, saying the move to 9000 series it so align with its CPUs while the shift from a 0x00 format to a 00Γ0 format is to make for a clearer comparison to rival Nvidia graphics cards. Thus, the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 are rivals to the RTX 5070 range of Nvidia cards.
As for comparisons to currently-available cards, early leaked data suggested the RX 9070 XT could match the RTX 4080βs performance, and other leaks suggested it might even beat the RTX 4080 Super. However, AMDβs own slides show the RX 9070 cards more in line with the RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 Super on the Nvidia side and the RX 7900 XT, RX 7900 GRE, and RX 7800 XT from its own current GPU range.
So, while AMD didnβt share final specs or a release date at its RX 9070 XT announcement, the picture of its performance and arrival is getting clearer. Whatβs more, we shouldnβt have long to wait for more information, as AMD has hinted a more detailed AMD RX 9070 XT launch event could be happening soon.
