This 12VHPWR adapter could save your Nvidia GeForce RTX gaming GPU from melting

-

Melting 12VHPWR cables on Nvidia GeForce graphics cards have been an ongoing issue since the company’s flagship RTX 4090 card launched, but one Chinese company thinks it finally has the solution. A seller on TaoBao, an online shopping platform, is advertising an angled adapter that features both temperature and power draw on a tiny display, helping you get ahead of any issues that could cause permanent damage to your graphics card.

Sadly, this adapter is not advertised as compatible with Nvidiaβ€˜s new RTX 5090 or 5080 graphics cards. Instead, only the RTX 4090, 4080, and 4070 are mentioned, although this could just be because the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 Founders Edition cards have the power socket in an odd position, rather than this adapter not otherwise having the capcity to work with those cards.

More than just a display, this clever adapter also features a mini fan, although just how effective it actually is as a cooling solution remains to be seen. The adapter costs 219RMB, which converts to around $30 based on the current conversion rate.

Angled adapters were some gamers’ go-to solution to deal with the sometimes awkward cable management involved with fitting an RTX 40-series card into their case with the 12VHPWR connection. When we reported on the problem back in November 2023, it was made clear by NorthridgeFix that even when using angled cables, though, the connection still wasn’t guaranteed to be safe.

Despite this, we’ve seen continued innovation with angle cables, such as the be quiet! 12V-6Γ—6 cable we saw at CES last year, and now of course this new product.

The crucial aspect of this adapter would appear to be its ability to track power usage and temperature, but it very much depends on how well this works. An unproven solution like this from a not widely known supplier could ultimately cause more problems than it solves. Anyone brave enough to test it?
