Apple TV+ series ‘Silo’ ranks on Nielsen Top 10 streaming chart for the first time ever

-

In perhaps yet another sign of the growing reach of Apple TV+ content, the sci-fi series Silo has ranked on the Nielsen U.S. streaming originals chart for the first time ever. The show ranked 9th with 417 million minutes viewed, for the week of December 30 through January 5.

This is one in just a handful of appearances of an Apple TV+ title on this chart. Typically, Apple shows are not popular enough to make it onto the Top 10 list of streaming originals, according to Nielsen’s numbers anyway.

Apple shows don’t appear on the Nielsen very often. Previous titles to feature include Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and Hijack.

In the past, Apple has disputed the accuracy of Nielsen’s reporting suggesting it does not include all viewing demographics of streaming and does not reflect the worldwide distribution of the Apple TV+ service.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, the chart is usually dominated by Netflix titles, which boasts 90 million US subscribers.

For the week ending January 5, the chart was as follows:

  1. Squid Game (Netflix)
  2. Virgin Riviera (Netflix)
  3. Landman (Paramount+)
  4. Missing You (Netflix)
  5. Evil (Netflix)
  6. Special Ops: Lioness (Paramount+)
  7. Black Doves (Netflix)
  8. No Good Deed (Netflix)
  9. Silo (Apple TV+)
  10. Beast Games (Amazon Prime Video)

As of January 5, Silo was in the middle of its season two run with 8 of the 10 episodes released. We’ll have to wait and see whether Silo rises higher in the chart when Nielsen reports for the period covering the season two finale.

Perhaps a significant factor, the January 4-5 dates was when Apple was running its free weekend promotion for the Apple TV+ service, which meant anyone could tune in and watch Apple originals with no commitment.

Nevertheless, its appearance on the chart is another indicator that Apple is slowly but surely expanding the reach and engagement of its programming.

Apple has previously said that Silo is one of its most popular drama series. The show is renewed for a third and fourth season, which will conclude the story as laid out in the Hugh Howey book series on which it is based.
