Don’t pull out this new Lenovo SSD grenade on public transport

-

Lenovo has made an external SSD in the shape of a grenade. Yes, really. The new USB 3.2 drive is currently on a crowd-funding platform in China, where it’s been racing against time to exist and cause someone trouble somewhere down the road.

Lenovo, maker of some of the best gaming laptop designs, is working on a tie-in with a recently released Chinese movie. The action flick, Operation Leviathan, is the inspiration for the grenade SSD, which is looking set to meet its crowdfunding goal in the next 24 days.

It’s dubbed the “Savior Tactical Mobile SSD” and priced at 599 yuan (around $82). However, Lenovo hasn’t revealed much in the way of specs. It’s possible that it could be based Lenovo’s Legion SSD, which in China is named “Savior”. This is a fairly standard external drive with USB-C and speeds up to 1,050MB/s.

The movie itself hasn’t been released yet, with a date of January 29 set for those able to see it in cinemas. It follows an elite squad as they deal with submarines and explosions.

If you want one, though, you’ll also have to navigate Lenovo’s weird Kickstarter-styled website, which keeps booting us out into the main webpage. Instead, if you don’t mind having an SSD that looks less explosive, we recommend checking out our best external SSD guide.

Weaponry-themed PC kits are usually saved for elaborate projects or events, but instead, Lenovo is doing it themselves. It’s also not the first time a company has partnered with a movie to create a dedicated piece of hardware. For example, Seagate has also released a Star Wars SSD, based on The Mandalorian’s Beskar metal. Asus has repeatedly released Neon Genesis Evangelion PCs and gear.

Lenovo is also soon set to launch its follow-ups to the Legion Go, its next entry in the race to make the best gaming handheld. It’s going to be one of the first companies to work with Valve on bringing SteamOS to more handhelds, as well as AMD to use the Ryzen Z2 Go processor in the upcoming Linux-based handheld.
